    Notes:

Thomas Gardner was reported missing during Civil War and buried behind enemy lines during The Battle of Antietam (also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg), fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek, as part of the Maryland Campaign, was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Union soil. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 casualties.

From the New Orleans Daily Picayune, 17 Dec 1862:
Louisiana Wounded at Antietam. Also Those Since Dead. Federal Report.
[Among those listed, is the following:]
    Eighth Louisiana
Thos Gardner, private, Co. H, bad fracture near head, left femur, arm, flesh, died Oct. 30

    Buried:
Thomas S. Gardner is buried in one of the unmarked graves in the Washington Confederate Cemetery within Rose Hill Cemetery. As noted in "A Descriptive List of the Burial Places of the Remains of Confederate Soldiers" he was initially buried in "Rev. J. J. Adams town lot, back of M. E. Graveyard" and was later moved to Washington Cemetery.

The Washington Confederate Cemetery map at http://www.whilbr.org/assets/uploads/Confederate%20Cemetery%20Hagerstown.pdf shows B. Gardner but this is obviously in error. The Louisiana men are all buried around him, and he was the only Gardner from Louisiana killed in that battle. You will see the notation to the left of another row to the left that states Louisianans. J. Garto and P. N. Duplesis, who were mess mates of Gardner, are in the same row as he is.

The Rev. Adams previously noted is actually Rev. John Alexander Adams who was the rector at St. Paul's Episcopal church in downtown Sharpsburg in 1866 according to http://archive.org/details/journalannualco29convgoog. Also, refer to the historic site survey at http://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/stagsere/se1/se5/021000/021500/021555/pdf/msa_se5_21555.pdf for more information on Rev. John Alexander Adams.

St. Paul's Episcopal church in downtown Sharpsburg was used as a hospital by the Confederates. They did bury men outside of it, and they were later reinterred at Washington Cemetery.

Washington Confederate Cemetery is a separate cemetery located within the grounds of Rose Hill Cemetery. It was dedicated on June 15, 1877. Most of the graves are of Confederate soldiers who died in the nearby battles of Antietam and South Mountain. More than 2000 soldiers are buried here but only 346 were identified. Only three of the graves have any markers, but an old map of the cemetery is mounted on a plaque at the site.
