    Mr. Joseph Ozea Carrier
    Funeral services for Mr. Joseph Ozea Carriere [sic], 67, were held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Holy Ghost Catholic Church with burial in the St. Landry Catholic Cemetery.
    Mr. Carriere died Monday at 7:30 a.m. in the Easy Way General Hospital in Houston, Texas.
    Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lila Carriere of Houston, Texas; two sons, Herman and Louis Carriere, both of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Mrs. Betty Jean Ray of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Lou Wilda Carmouche Babineaux and Mrs. Elizabeth Phillips, both of Opelousas; eight grandchildren.
    Williams Funeral Home of Opelousas was in charge of arrangements.

    This information has been provided by Mr. Raymond Gordon of California. Mr. Gordon is a decendent of Francois "Howard" Hollier. I am indebted to him for providing this information.

    "The clarification needed is that Faustin Hollier fathered a son in 1834 before he married Virginie DeVillier. Faustin acknowledged and raised his son along with his other children.
    As was custom at that time and to protect his wife and legitimate children, Françoise was given the made-up surname Howard, which Françoise used until sometime after the 1880s when he could freely use his real last name.

    In the 1877 probate record of Faustin Hollier, Francois Howard is acknowledged in the distribution of land section along with Faustin's other children."
