The Will of Widow Deborah Hawley
"In the name of God, Amen. This first day of October, A D 1739, I, Deborah Hawley of Stratford, in the County of Fairfield and Colony of Connecticut in New England, widow and relict of Capt John Hawley, late of Stratford, deceased, being aged and infirm of body but of perfect mind and memory; therefore calling into mind ye mortality of my body, and knowing yt it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, yt is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God yt gave it, and my body I recommend to ye Earth to be buried in Christian decent burial at ye discretion of my executor hereinafter named; and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me with here in this life, I give and dispose of ye same in ye following manner:
Imprimis. After my just debts and funeral charges are satisfied and paid, I give unto my son Henry Hawley of Stratford and unto his heirs and assigns forever one north purchase of land so called in ye bounds of Woodbury, be ye same more or less, he paying to my son, Nathan Hawley, five pounds money.
Item. I give to my son-in-law, Daniel Porter of said Stratford, ten shillings and what is due to me from him on book account.
Item. I give to my son Nathan Hawley ten shillings.
Item. I give to my son Joseph Hawley of said Stratford, ten sheep.
Item. I give unto Ephraim Judson, Joseph Judson, Nathan Judson, Henry Judson, Rebecca Curtiss, ye wife of Stiles Curtiss, and Hannah Judson, all of said Stratford, being ye children of my son-in-law, Capt Joseph Judson, by his wife Hannah Judson, my deceased daughter, one hundred pounds to be equally divided among them, and I also further give unto ye said Rebecca a silver cup and one silver spoon.
I give to my daughter Mary Read, my wearing apparel and my bed and furniture.
Item. Ye remainder of my estate which is not above given and disposed of, I give unto my son-in-law Mr John Read of Reading, in said County, and unto my son Joseph Hawley of said Stratford, equally between them. And I do hereby constitute and appoint my said son-in-law Mr John Read, and my said son Joseph Hawley, executors of this my last Will and Testament, disallowing and revoking all and every other will or wills by me before made, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament.
In witness and confirmation hereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in Stratford, ye day and date first above mentioned, signed sealed, published and delivered by ye said Deborah (interlined before signing ye words) Hawley, to be her last Will and Testament. (I give to my daughter Mary Read, my wearing apparel and my bed and furniture.) Deborah Hawley
