    Notes:

The Schaaf family, made up of the parents and six children left for Louisiana in December 1720 aboard the ship La Garonne. By January 1721, the ship's passengers were showing signs of an epidemic and docked at Brest, France to take refuge. The ship left Brest on February 27, 1721 and arrived at Saint Domingue (where the ships normally stopped enroute to Louisiana to pick up trade goods bound for Louisiana) where it was captured on April 30, 1731 by a pirate ship called La Gaillarde. The ship's passengers were rescued by the governor of Saint Dominque and brought to Cap Francois on July 19, 1721. During the journey, the German immigrants had experienced the effects of one of the worst epidemics in recorded history (300 Germans were sick), and after the attack by pirates, there were only 50 survivors. When the Schaaf family disembarked in Louisiana, the Schaaf parents had died, the survivors found that the Company of the Indies had gone bankrupt so that they had no land to settle, and they were literally stranded. Although the German population had little influence on the culture of Louisiana, many inhabitants of St Charles Parish still carry gallicized version of the original German surnames, such as Schexnaydre, Folse, and Oubre. The Schaaf family would be known as Chauff and, on one occasion, Mouton. One town name, "Des Allemands", is a modern reminder of the town's origin.

    Evergreen Plantation

The important plantation houses on adjacent plantations in St. John the Baptist Parish now known as Evergreen and Whitney originally were identical houses built probably at the same time by two brothers, Christophe and Jean Jacques Haydel, sons of Ambroise Haydel. Their grandmother, the widow of Jean Adam Heidel, had, with two sons, arrived at Biloxi on the ship La Charente in 1721. One of these sons, Ambroise Haydel, had been born about 1702 in Newkirchen, and in 1724 was living on the Louisiana German Coast in the village of Hoffen.

The house that is now Whitney was probably built by Jean Jacques Haydel and Evergreen by his brother Chrisophe in the 1780s or '90s. Christophe's daughter Magdelaine, the widow of Pierre Antoine Becnel, acquired full ownership of the plantation in 1801 from her sister Françoise, wife of Pierre Marmillon. One of Magdelaine's sons, Drozin, and his wife both died of smallpox in 1804, leaving their son Pierre Clidamant Becnel in his grandmother's care. On her death in 1830, Pierre Clidamant gained full ownership of the plantation by purchasing the interest of the other of his grandmother's heirs.

Jean Jacques built the Whitney main house around 1790 and expanded it around 1803. In 1820, he sold the property to his sons Jean Jacques, Jr., and Marcellin. Marcellin eventually gained total control of the rest of the family's land, and commissioned the 1836-1839 remodeling. The plantation remained in the family's hands until it was sold to a Northerner, Bradish Johnson, after the Civil War. It was Johnson who actually named the property Whitney in honor of his grandson, Harry Payne Whitney.
