Today, second of the month of november of the year eighteen
hundred forty four, the sixty ninth year of the
Independence of
the United States of America, by virtue
of a written order from the Honorable probate Court in
and for St.Charles Parish,
dated November first of the
present year rendered upon petition of Mr. Onesiphore
St.Amand, executor of the will of the late
Antoine
D'Aspit St. Amand.
Today, first of the month of May of the year eighteen
hundred and thirty eight, sixty second of the Independenc
e of the United
States of America, I, F.L. Labranche, Judge in and for St. Charles Parish in which I reside and practice the fontions of
Notary Public, upon request
of Mr. Antoine St. Amand of this Parish, have called to
this residence at three o’clock in the
afternoon in order
to receive his last will and testament. I found said
Antoine St.Amand in a bedroom lit by a window facing
the river, opening on a gallery, connected by a back
door to a second gallery, sound of mind, memory and
judgement as it
appeared to me, above named Judge-Notary as well as to the witnesses whose names follow:
Louis Friloux, Pierre Kinter and
Jacques Kinter, all major of age and residing in this Parish. He declared
that, although not ill at the present moment but
being very old, he must expect to die at any time and did
not want to be taken by death unaware. To that effect he requested
me to receive his last will and testament,
which I did immediately, before the above named witnesses, under the dictation of
the testator, as follows.
I declare that my name is Antoine D'Aspit (?) St. Amand son of Dominique St. Amand and Francoise Pujol, both
deceased. I was
born in St. Charles Parish in seventeen
hundred and fifty-seven and have always resided there. I married a second time with
Dme. Celeste, Henry Jean Eldemair. I had four children from that second marriage, three
of them being stïll alive: Dme Eliza
St.Amand, Onesime
Onesiphore St.Amand and Eluther (?) St.Amand. I deçiare
that I had, outside of my marriage, from my
relations
with Therese Belasie, free negrees, four children named:
Honorine, mulata, of about sixteen years of age, Arsene,
mulato, about fifteen years old, Victorin, mulato, about
twelve years old and Jean Baptiste Brecourt, mulato, about nine years
old.
I declare granting full and complete freedom to the above named children, Honorine, Victorin, Arsene and Jean-Baptiste
Brecourt and request
the executor of the present will, whom I shall
designate, to fulfill all necessary formalities required
by the law for the emancipation of those children, born to the negrees Belasie before she was granted her freedom.
I give and bequeath to each of the above named
children, Honorine, Arsene, Victorin, and Jean—Baptiste
Brecourt, to be taken
from the cash balance of my estate, the amount of one hundred piastres, payable in
full, said amount to be deposited with
their mother and held by her until the majority of the marriage of
each child. I wish said amount of four hundred piastres
bequested hereby, paid to Theree Belasie within the year following wy death.
I give and bequeath to said Therese Belasie the amount
of four hundred piastres to be paid in one single payment
by my
executor within six months following my death.
I declare also that I grant their freedom to my two slaves, Francois and Marie,
both of about sixty years
of age. I give and bequeath to the shop of the St. Charles
Parish Church the amount of one hundred
piastres payable
in one single payment.
I give and bequeath to Arsene, son of Therese Belasi,
named above, my saddle horse called Cayetano, which I
bought at the sale
of the late Norbert Zeringue’s estate. I also give and bequeath a cow tQ each of the other
children of Therese Belasie:
Honorine, Victorin, and
Jean—Baptiste Brecourt, said cows, with the horse Cayetano to be entrusted by my executers to Therese
Belasie.
And, for the executor of the present will, I designate
my nephew and godson, Mr. Onesiphore St.Anand, to whom I entrust the
safekeeping of all my possessions
from the day of my death and to whom I give all necessary powers for the líquidation of my
estate. In case
of incapacity or death of my godson and nephew, Onesiphore St.Amand, I name, as executor of the present will
my relative and friend, Mr. Charles Perret, to whom I
delegate all powers given by me in the present will to
the above named
Onesiphore St. Amand, my nephew.
I hereby cancel and revoke all other testaments of codicils which I could have drawn prior to
the present will which, I declare, contains the fina], and valid
expression of my last will.
The above has been taken down under dictation by the testator, Antoine St. Amand, by me, Judge—Notary
undersigned, writing
without interruption before the
above named witnesses, after which, I, Judge—Notary,
in presence of said witnesses, have read
the present testament to the testator who declared that it contained the correct and faithful expression of his last will.
Drawn and given in 5t. Charles Parish, in the residence of Mr. Antoine St. Amand, on the day, month and year indicated above,
in presence of the above
named witnesses who, together with the teatator, have signed with me, Judge—Notary, after reading the
present document.

safekeeping for eventual consultation in the archives
