Leola Chamblee, 101, passed away Monday, March 12, 2012, in a local care center.
Leola was born in Breaux Bridge in 1910 and lived most of her life in Sulphur and Carlyss. She graduated from the Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in Beaumont, Texas and began her nursing career as a registered nurse at St. Patrick's Hospital in Lake Charles. After the opening of Sulphur's Cal-Cal Hospital, she began working there for several years, but later returned to Christus St. Patrick Hospital in Lake Charles where she was a supervisor of nursing until her retirement in 1970. She was a former C.C.D. teacher, a former member of the Sulphur Garden Club, former Jr. Catholic Daughter Leader, a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Carlyss.
Survivors include her sons, Byron Chamblee and wife, Evelyn of Carlyss, and Gary Chamblee of Conroe, Texas; five grandchildren, Kent Chamblee and wife, Stephanie and Sheri Yarbrough and husband, Doug, all of Carlyss, Terry Chamblee and Brooke Gilcrease and husband, Brad, all of Houston, Texas, and Mark Chamblee and wife, Tracy of The Woodlands, Texas; seven great-grandchildren, Hannah Chamblee, Cody and Kaitlin Yarbrough, all of Carlyss, Madison and Ryan Gilcrease of Houston, Texas, and Cameron and Alyssa Chamblee of The Woodlands, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Hollier and Camille Hollier Martin; step-father, Clovis Martin; brother, Jess Hollier; sister-in-law, Dorothy "Dot" Hollier; and daughter-in-law, Linda Chamblee.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, in St. Theresa Catholic Church. The Rev. Joe Aquino will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and Nephews. Visitation will be held in the funeral home 4-8 p.m. Friday with a rosary service at 7 p.m. and from 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Holly Hill Nursing Staff, and to Odyssey Hospice for their loving care of our mother and grandmother. Memorial donations may be made in Leola's memory to Our Lady's Catholic School, 1111 Cypress Street, Sulphur, LA 70663, or to M.D. Anderson Hospital, Houston, Texas.
