Opelousas – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for John Mervin Sonnier at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, in the Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA. Monsignor Louis Melancon will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal will be held at Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Sonnier, age 79, was born in Church Point on December 13, 1934. He was a resident of Opelousas, LA and prior resident of Norman, OK. He went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 24, 2014.
John graduated from USL in 1961 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a member of the American Legion. He retired from working for the government after 30 years. John enjoyed playing the guitar and accordion, camping and outdoor recreation, traveling the world, watching all of his favorite football teams play, and cooking and sharing the Cajun culture. John was very proud of his Cajun heritage and enjoyed speaking French every opportunity he had. He was at his happiest spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.
Survivors are his special loved one, Terry Perrin, of Opelousas, LA and Boerne, TX; his son, Chris Sonnier and wife, Donna, of Sutherland Springs, TX; his daughters, Cheryl Sonnier and fiancé, Yves “Harry” Bergeron, of Opelousas, LA; Jenny Shaver and husband, Tom, of Gulfport, MS; his brother, David Sonnier and wife, Gloria, of Iota, LA; his sister, Kathy Mier and husband, Louis, of Zachary, LA and his sister-in-law, Verlie Sonnier. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Channelle Tyrrell, Chynna Sonnier, Kali Carpenter, Jeff Shaver, Jade Alvarado, Jordan Shaver, Jolee Shaver and 1 great-grandchild, Henley Lopez.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Dufilho Sonnier; his parents, David and Virgie Thibodeaux Sonnier; his son, Robbie John Sonnier; his brother, Floyd Sonnier and his sister, Irma Fuselier.
Visitation will be held at the LaFond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and will reopen on Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. until service time. A rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be Mark Hollier, Scott Fontenot, Eric Fontenot, Karl Dufilho, Brian Dufilho, David Dufilho, Karl Sonnier, Deon Trahan, Michael Sonnier, Eric Fuselier, Gil Sonnier, Mark Sonnier, Tim Sonnier, Paul Mier and Bobby Wheeler.

Gloria Dufilho, 60, of Norman, went to be with the Lord, Monday, March 13 in Norman. She was born December 12, 1939, to Louis and Celeste (St. Amand) Dufilho in Opelousas, LA. She married John Mervin Sonnier on May 21, 1958. Mrs. Sonnier was a member of St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church in Norman. She was a homemaker and worked at OU as a computer operator. She is survived by her husband, John Mervin Sonnier of the home; two sons, Chris Sonnier and his wife, Donna of San Antonio, TX, Robbie Sonnier of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Cheryl Sonnier of Norman, Jenny Sonnier of Oklahoma City; a brother, Harold Dufilho of Orting, WA; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna and Joe Stelly of Opelousas, LA, Rose and Edwin Hollier of Opelousas, LA, Beverly and Donald Fontenot of DeRidder, LA; four granddaughters, Channelle Sonnier, Chynna Sonnier, Kali Sonnier, and Jade Alvarado. Her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, David and Virgie Sonnier; and a sister-in-law, Irma Sonnier Fuselier, preceded Mrs. Sonnier in death. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested the Scleroderma Foundation, 89 Newbury St., Suite 201, Danvers, MA 01923. A Rosary will be held 7:00 PM Wednesday at the Primrose Chapel with Rev. William Novak officiating. Burial will be later in Opelousas, LA.
