Colfax Town Marshal Killed
J. M. Dufilho, 52, Dead; J. R. Whittington is Wounded
Special to Town Talk
COLFAX, La., May 19—A tragedy occurred here at 12:40 o’clock today which resulted in the instant death of J. M. Dufilho, town marshal of Colfax, and the serious wounding of J. R. Whittington, well-known timber contractor also of this town.
Dufilho was shot twice by Whittington with a double-barrel shot gun loaded with buck-shot. His heart was torn out and he expired immediately. Whittington was shot once by Dufilho, with a 41-caliber Colts revolver. The shooting occurred at Whittington’s home. Dufilho is believed to have fired the first shot, according to Deputy Sheriff Perkins in a long-distance message to Town Talk this afternoon. Whittington was rushed to the Baptist Hospital in this city, immediately after the shooting. He admitted shooting Dufilho but his condition was such that he was unable to give any details in reference to the trouble.
Dufilho is about 52 years old and has a wife and a daughter. He has been a resident of Colfax for many years, having held the office of town marshal for a number of years.
Whittington is married, but has no children. He is 48 years old. Both men have been good friends, and cause of the trouble has not been ascertained.
Dr. Jones, coroner of Grant parish, accompanied Whittington to the hospital, and Dr. A. J. Morat, acting coroner, viewed the body of Dufilho, but did not hold an inquest, as Whittington admitted the killing.
The tragedy has thrown the town into a fever of excitement.
