• Notes

  Early in life Pierre Bauchet St. Martin shipped before the mast. He participated in the war of 1744 and witnessed the taking of the citadel at Louisbourg by the Yankees from Boston in June, 1745. In 1750 he was captain of his ship. What caused him to steer his course to Louisiana is not known, nor why it was that he resigned his commission after arriving here. In 1758, having become a prosperous farmer with an extensive plantation on the present site of Algiers, he took unto himself as wife, Charlotte Therese Gallot. After an active successful life, during which he begot five children, he died, a patriarch, in 1805.
