Gardner, who died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Vidalia. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Home. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church. 3403 | Orramel Hinckley was a steamboat owner and captain whose business was centered principally in New Orleans and Opelousas, Louisiana. He lived in Washington, Louisiana with his wife, Anna Hawley Gardner, and their children. Anna was the daughter of Thomas Gardner and granddaughter of Asa Norton, tanners and dealers in hides and deer skins in St. Landry Parish. Steamers: Anna Perret (Perrette) & Nina Simmes were bought by Louisiana with Confederate money and used during the Civil War. [Eakin, Washington, Louisiana, .48-49]The Nina Simmes was built in New Albany, Indiana in 1860. During the Civil War it served as a Confederate troop transoport along Bayou Cortableau. The steamer Aline was appropriated by the Confederacy in 1861. [Brasseaux and Fontenot, Steamboats on Louisiana's Bayous: A History and Directory, 220.] Others were Annie Wagley A. W. Glaze Aline Flatboats: Robert E. Lee Hinckley served as a second lieutenant on Confederate transport vessels and was a Royal Arch Mason.
