[7bre is an archaic style of abbreviation for the French “Septembre”. Although the way it is written in this entry it is easily mistaken as “Fvre” for “Février”, there are several others written more clearly as “7bre” on the same page. In addition, these entries are immediately following August and prior to other very clear September entries.]

3355 On the 4th of July, 1632, the Royal French frigate l'Esperance en Dieu, escorting two transports, set sail from d'Auray bound for Acadia. The Treaty of Saint-Germain en Laye had just been signed recognizing for the first time Acadia as a French possession, and the Sieur Isaac de Razilly, on instructions from Cardinal Richelieu, was proceeding with three hundred men, recruited from Touraine and Brittany, to take delivery of Port Royal from the English and to establish there a permanent colony.

Among the followers of de Razilly who debarked at la Heve on the 8th of September, 1632, were Pierre Martin, his wife, Catherine Vigneau and their young son, also named Pierre, aged six. They were peasants from Brittany. In 1636, Pierre Martin and his wife had moved to Port Royal and in the same year a second son was born to them. He was named Mathieu and was the first child of French parentage born in Acadia. This circumstance earned for Mathieu, in 1680, and enfeoffment of lands near Grand Pré and a noble particule which rechristened him Sieur Mathieu de Saint-Martin.
