The Treaty of Saint-Germain en Laye had just been signed recognizing for the first time Acadia as a French possession, and the Sieur Isaac de Razilly, on instructions from Cardinal Richelieu, was proceeding with three hundred men, recruited from Touraine and Brittany, to take delivery of Port Royal from the English and to establish there a permanent colony.

Among the followers of de Razilly who debarked at la Heve on the 8th of September, 1632, were Pierre Martin, his wife, Catherine Vigneau and their young son, also named Pierre, aged six.
