He was for five years a student of Emmetsburg College, Maryland, and subsequently pursued a course of medicine in the Medical College of Paris, from which institution he received his degree. He began his professional career in St. Landry parish, in 1836, and was engaged in active practice until 1889, when, feeling the weight of his years, he retired from his professional duties.

Dr. Debaillon was married in 1838, to Miss Amy Toledano, a native of Louisiana, born in New Orleans, 1822. They became the parents of twelve children, eight sons and four daughters. The doctor has prospered financially, and owns considerable property in St. Landry parish.

The subject's maternal grandfather, Fontenot, was one of the first settlers of St. Landry parish, and the only man at that time who spoke English. He also spoke the Indian language fluently.

Mrs. Dr. Debaillon died in this parish in 1887. She was a member of the Catholic church.

    Obituary:
It is with deep feeling of regret that we announce the demise of Capt. O. Hinckley, who died - after a lingering illness of several months - at his residence in Washington, on Tuesday last, at the age of 55 years.

Capt. Hinckley was too well and favorable known lor us to repeat here his good qualities. His disiuterestedness, his simple and open urbanity of manners, and oilier qualities of the heart will long he remembered by many.

Capt. Hinckley came to our parish about thirty years ago, most of which time he was interested in our steamboat navigation. He leaves a family and a large, circle of friends to whom his remembrance will ever be dear.

Anacharsis Albanne Luminais (son of Laurent Alexandre Luminais and Marie Magdelaine Burgaud des Bouchauds) was born 18 April 1796 in Bouin, Vendeé, France. Birth certificate states "vingt-neuf germinal, quatriéme année Republicaine" as date of birth., and died 2 October 1867 in New Orleans, La. at his residence, the corner of St. Anne and Romain St.

The following is from the St. John Parish Sheriff's Office (http://stjohnsheriff.org/general.php?id=132):

    Sheriff Anacharsis Luminais
    Served in office 1828 - 1852

The following are excerpts from a manuscript by Lynn Louque, 3 rue Rapine,44210 Pornic France; entitled Des Luminais, A Historical Perspective of Anacharsis Luminais and his Family. Sheriff Anacharsis Luminais was a great great great grandfather of Lynn Louque who provided the below information.

    The newspaper "L'Avant-Coureur" of New Orleans, on Saturday 12 October 1867 carried the following obituary;

"On 2 October Mr. Anacharsis Luminais died in New Orleans, at the age of seventy-three years. Born in Nantes, France Mr. Luminais left his country in 1816 because the restoration of the Bourbons was repulsive to his liberal opinions. He came to St. John the Baptiste at the same time as Father Mina and Dr. Haudressy, two other distinguished gentleman who have passed away in recent years. Mr. Luminais allied himself with a créole family when he married a Miss Trouard. He was sheriff for twenty-two years of St. John the Baptiste and St. Charles when these parishes were called the "Côte des Allemands". He was, in his public and private life, a man of irreproachable character and integrity. We hear time and again, talk of his generosity and kindness. Impoverished by the exercise of his noble qualities, he did not always find in his old age the recognition which was rightly his."

Anacharsis Albanne Luminais was born on 18 April 1796 (according to his birth certificate, "vingt-neuf germinal, quatrième année républicaine") in Bouin, France. At this time the town of Bouin was located on an island of the same name in the Vendeé region, on the western coast of France. Today, the island is surrounded on three sides by agricultural fields reclaimed from the sea by a series of dikes and canals. Born just after the height of the revolutionary excesses, most of his formative years were spent in the glory of the Empire. He was the fourth born, son of Laurent Alexandre Luminais and Marie Magdelaine Burgaud des Bouchauds. His name is a legacy of pre-Revolutionary French society's fascination with Classical Greek and Roman revivalism. He and his brothers were named after Greek and Roman Republic heroes.

There is an empty space for Anacharsis and his time in New Orleans, from 1816 until 1824. It is possible that he travelled from New Orleans to Martinique and Saint Domingue as a merchant. I have not located any records for him in St. John Parish until 1824 when he signed a procuration to his uncle Rene Luminais to settle his affairs in the succession of his mother who died in 1821. He continued to live in St. John, because he was appointed deputy sheriff on 21 May 1827, and also served as parish Treasurer. He was elected as Sheriff of St. John in 1828 and served until 1854, longer than any other Sheriff. He owned a small plantation directly across the river from Antione Boudousquie's plantation which he sold sometime prior to the Civil War, when he moved to New Orleans after he retired as Sheriff.

"Other distinguished members of his family in France are the Representative Luminais elected by the district of Indre-et-Loire to the Constituional Convention of 1848 and probably also the painter of Breton culture, Evariste-Vidal Luminais." (Translation of the French original)

Anacharsis's father, Laurent Alexandre Luminais and his uncles, Michel Pierre, and René Laurent, were educated in the principles of the Age of Reason. They were members of a generation of Frenchmen who believed in the Greek ideal of a statesmen as portrayed in the Century of Alexander. Their father Michel Luminay, Sieur des Cloudis, Procureur du Roi for the Isle of Bouin, raised his sons in a time of Greco-Roman revival in arts, literature, and politics. He held the equivalent position of District Attorney for the King from 1769 until he died in 1781. He was a lawyer and before becoming the Procureur for Bouin served as "Sénéchal" in the town of les Moutiers, and became "Marguillier en charge" of the town of Bougneuf in 1751. These positions were of a mid-level bureaucrat for the king's interest in these regions, an Officer of the king's court similar to Assistant D.A., Bailiff, and chief tax collector all in one. He also wrote the local "bulletins" which served as a kind of the local newspaper, although this position seemed to be of his own ambition since he wasn't paid to do it.

The house, "maison du Martinet" in which Anacharsis Luminais was born, is still in standing in Bouin and is today a Hotel-Restaurant. It was built by his maternal Great-Grandfather Jean François Burgaud, sieur des Bouchards, about 1715. Jean François Burgaud was an armateur (he owned ships), merchant, and ship's Captain who made a fortune trading slaves to the French Antilles and Louisiana in the late 1600's and early 1700's. His son, Jean Baptiste Burgaud, born in this house in 1720, inherited his father's title, sieur des Bouchards, occupation, as well as the house after his father died in 1743. Anacharsis's mother, Marie Magdelaine Burgaud, was born there in 1766. The house became the property of Laurent Alexandre Luminais and his wife Marie-Magdelaine Burgaud des Bouchards, on 26 October 1783. Three of Marie Burgaud's brothers, one sister, and a brother-in-law were killed by royalist forces during the revolt in the Vendée, in March 1793. Only she and her younger brother Thomas were not murdered.

Anacharsis was baptised "Alphonse" in Bouin on 18 September 1804 after Napoleon established a quasi-normal relationship with the Catholic Church and was crowned Emperor by Pope Pius VII. This was in fact an early form of public relations showmanship on the part of local public officials, in this case Laurent Alexandre Luminais, supporting the new Franco-Vatican partnership. Baptized along with Anacharsis, were his brother Achilles (Napoleon) age 9, Virginie (Marie-Magdelaine-Octavie) age 7, and Cornélie, age 6. The same day in Bouin at least a half dozen more boys were baptized "Napoleon."

On 7 August 1811 Anacharsis began his second year at the college in St. Jean de Monts where his father owned a home and had been a Judge. One of fifty students who studied through the "bienfaisance d'Empereur", he was enrolled in a classic educational course of grammar, mathematics and Greek and Latin languages . This scholastic regime was the normal foundation for a career in law. Many of his classmates went on to become lawyers and politicians in France. In June 1813 after completion of his fourth year of college, instead of a career in law and perhaps to evade military service, he became a pilotin (an apprentice officer, a pilot) on a merchant vessel owned by Ulrich-Auguste Pelloutier , a friend, business associate and next door neighbor of his uncle, René Laurent Luminais. Anacharsis' three older brothers were already in the service of the Emperor Napoleon; Alexandre was a surgeon in the Navy, aboard a ship moored in Brest. Achille and Aubin Brutus Luminais were in the Army on their way to the Austrian frontier to fight in the "Saxon Campaign".

Anacharsis Luminais went to America at least once before he decided to stay there. In 1815, on the maiden voyage of the L'Atalante, he served as an apprentice pilot, sailing from Nantes in April to Saint Domingue, then on to New Orleans. On this voyage he met Mr. Charles Hardy de Boisblanc (fils) who sailed with him on the return voyage to Nantes. Charles Hardy's grandfather, Pierre, was originally from la Rochelle, owned a number of ships and became rich trading in slaves. Pierre Hardy's wife was Louise Taton from Martinique. The friendship with the younger Charles Hardy connected Anacharsis not only to important business interests in New Orleans but also many powerful families connected by blood and marriage, including his future father-in-law, Louis Jacques Trouard the son of Judge Achille Trouard. Charles Hardy (senior) was married to Marienne Constance Chauvin de Léry. Her brother married Adéle Trouard, Achille's daughter, and Marienne's cousin, Eliza Chauvin de Léry, married Prosper (Louis Alexandre) Trouard, Achille's nephew.

There is a note to the 1815 voyage of the L'Atalante. Anacharsis is recorded as being a "pilotin" with one previous voyage. I have not been able to locate that previous ship's manifest on which Anacharsis served. Perhaps he sailed from another port instead of Nantes.

When the manifest for the 1816 voyage was recorded, Alexandre Luminais, Anacharsis's older brother was signed on as Ship's surgeon. They sailed to St. Domingue, then to New Orleans, where on the 23 of July 1816, Anacharsis is recorded as having deserted ship in New Orleans. Alexandre would also stay in New Orleans, for the reason of being too sick to make the voyage back to France. He would eventually go to St. Pierre, Martinique where he became the Minister of Health and ran the hospital there until he died on 25 June, 1835. It is possible that many of the passengers and crew were sick on this voyage, because when they arrived in Saint Domingue there were some desertions and a death, then in New Orleans nine other crewmen also deserted before the ship sailed back to France, after having signed on new crew members.

There are family histories that concern Anacharsis that have some relevance. From different family lines of his children it is said he was a gambler. He loved to play cards. He probably travelled up and down the river on the Riverboats. I have located a document that indicates he sold some property in the center of New Orleans, which he managed to acquire illegally along with his brother-in-law, Caliste Trouard. It seems they took a marker from a man in a card game who used his wife's property as collateral. Anacharsis and Caliste won the game and the property but had to relinquish control of the property because of this technicality.

Anacharsis is also said because of his position and business interests to have been challenged and participated in a number of duals. One, in which he chose the double-bladed, French war axe as his weapon of choice, his challenger never showed up. I also heard that either his father, brother or some other relatives from France visited him and he visited members of his family. I have not located voyages for these, but because of the correspondence and documents that his brother Alexandre visited him and possibly his cousin the painter, Evariste Luminais. His father died before he came to America.

When Anacharsis died in 1867, he still owned three estates in France, which were inherited from his mother and father. He rented these farms and received an income form them all of his life in Louisiana. The children of Anacharsis appointed someone to go to France in 1872, and sell these properties and the money was divided among the surviving children and grandchildren in New Orleans.

Anacharsis married 17 Feb. 1827, Jeanne Clara Trouard, the daughter of Louis Jacques Trouard and Marie Louise de L'Homme. They had 18 children including two sets of twins, only 9 of whom survived to be adults.

    Louis Dufilho
The year one thousand eight hundred and twenty three, the forty eighth of the independence of the United States of America, and the thirtieth day of September, eight o'clock in the morning, I, the undersigned Marc Lafitte, Notary public commissioned for the city and parish of New Orleans, residing there, I moved after requisition to Mr. Louis Dufilho, resident and owner in this parish, and being temporarily, because of his illness, in the home of his brother Mr. Dufilho, pharmacist, Rue de Chartres in this city, where having come I found the said Mr. Louis Dufilho in bed, sick of body, in a room overlooking the courtyard of a house rented by his brother, but having all his moral understanding, as he appeared with evidence to the Notary and to the three witnesses named below.

Mr. Louis Dufilho asked me to receive his will and act of last will that I, the notary, will write with my hand, word for word, and as the said testator will say and dictate it in the presence of Messrs. Died:
According to Louis's probate, he died on the first of the month. It is therefore assumed that the date on the tombstone index is the date of burial.

Louis married Aimée Delphine Bozonier Marmillion on 24 Apr 1805 in Edgard, St John the Baptist, Louisiana, USA. Aimée (daughter of Pierre Bozonier Marmillion and Francoise Haydel) was born on 14 Apr 1789 in St John the Baptist, Louisiana, USA; died on 18 Mar 1869 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA; was buried in St Louis Cemetery #2, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Notes:

    Residence:
Delphine Bozonier Marmillion, widow of Louis Dufilho (the sugar plantation owner and brother of the pharmacist Louis Joseph Dufilho Jr.), resided for many years in what is known as Villa Meilleur, which is located at the present-day address of 1418 Governor Nicholls Street in Tremé and now houses The New Orleans African American Museum (https://www.noaam.org). Delphine is also my 4th great-grandmother.

The villa was part of the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1933 and you can find that information here: https://www.loc.gov/item/la0299. The survey mistakenly notes that Delphine was “wife of the prominent pharmacist,” but the brothers often confused.

Governor Nicholls Street was historically known as Bayou Road and this villa was often referred to as “the residence on Bayou Road, between Marais and Villere streets” in many historical records. So, the fact that Delphine Bozonier Marmillion was the owner of this home is very clear. I do not yet know when she purchased the villa, but it was sometime between 1836-1841.
Delphine’s daughter, Sophie Marie Josephine (Dufilho) Lartigue, passed away in this home, as did her granddaughters, Delphine Lartigue in 1841 and Felicie (Lartigue) Goldthwaite in 1914.

The following was written about the villa in the Historic American Buildings Survey:

“Villa Meilleur is a raised creole villa with a basement that is submerged four feet into the ground. This, along with the high-pitched gabled roof, front gallery, central and rear loggias, double interior French door units, long windows, fixed louvered shutters, attic buffer zone, and thick solid brick walls create a perfect response to the hot, humid Louisiana environment. The central chimneys and basement ventilation system allows for excellent air control. The original four dormers allowed for each second primary level room to have cross ventilation through each side window.

The millwork throughout the villa is excellent and of heart cypress wood. The floors are heart red pine maintaining their original finish. The large front floor length double hung windows replace original French doors and provide exceptional air control. During the mid-nineteenth century they were installed with very fine and still extant gasoliers.”

    Notes:

After the settlement of his father's estate, Charles who owned the home place sold out and moved to Vincennes, Indiana, where he and his wife both died of the diseases of the country and their only son Oramel was taken possession of by a Mr. Wood and was removed to Mobile, Alabama, together with the property of which Wood had possession. This Oramel is eventually settled in Louisiana and is the progenitor of the Louisiana Hinckleys. ["Orramel Hinckley and Family Papers, Mss. 1151, 1317, 970"; LSU Special Collections.]

Arthur Latham Hinckley, Jr. notes that he has a letter written by Caroline (Hinckley) Latham to Orramel Strong Hinckley. In this letter Caroline writes that Orramel & Lydia (Strong) Hinckley died within a few weeks of each other and since Charles was the oldest, it was thought best for him to have the homestead and make a home for his sisters and brothers. He married the following spring (1812). Caroline left home when Oramel was about 3 yeras old. Not long afterwards, Charles "removed to the West."

    Died:
Although some sources state that Charles Hinckley died in 1814, this date cannot be correct if his son Orramel Hinckley was born in 1816. No hard evidence has been found for Charles' death and a death date of sometime after 1816 is the best available at this time.

    - Marie Généreuse born 12 Ventose year 5 [2 March 1797] at La Rochelle, married 2 April 1835 at Bergerac with Élie Giron and died 18 February 1836 at Bergerac. (cf. Acts)
    - Magdeleine Cora born 6 Germinal Year X [27 March 1802] at Bergerac and married at Bergerac 19 January 1831 (cf. Acts)
    - Jean Homehara born on 26 Fructidor Year XII [13 September 1804] at Bergerac (cf. Acts)
    - Étienne Alexis was born 6 April 1808 at Bergerac (cf. Acts)

[These children were young when their father Jean Grasset Latour died at Perpignan in 1811: Marie Généreuse,14; Magdeleine Cora, 8; Jean Homehara, 6; Étienne Alexis 4. Note that each child was given two first names.

Bergerac is key to the roots of the Latour family traced on this website. St. Landry Parish records document the marriages of two brothers from Bergerac, sons of the late Jean Grasset Latour and Marie Bertrand. There, the older brother, Pierre Grasset Latour, weds in 1826 and the younger brother, Alexis Grasset Latour, in 1833.

Researching the children of Jean Grasset Latour and Marie Bertrand in 1998, French genealogist Martine Duhamel found only two sons, both born in Bergerac: Jean Homehara Grasset Latour and Étienne Alexis Grasset Latour.

Étienne Alexis and his Louisiana counterpart Alexis are clearly one and the same. Louisiana records are consistently within a year or two of his actual age; only the first name "Étienne" seems to have been lost in the passage across the Altlantic. The older brother Pierre Grasset proves more difficult to pin down.

With the exception of marriage records and the birth records of two of his seven children, Pierre is known as simply "Grasset" Latour, even in his own death record. On at least one occasion, in 1846, he signs his name as "Grasset Latour" on a legal document. In the Federal censuses for 1830-1860 he can be found as Grasset Latour (under various spellings). In the 1830 census his age is given as from 20 to 30 years. Later censuses, place him slightly older, age 51 in 1850. The Church record of the death of "Grosset" Latour in 1860 at age 62, places his birth around 1798.

Duhamel found no birth record in Bergerac of a Pierre Grasset Latour or other any child of Jean Grasset Latour and Marie Bertrand before 1802.

Assume that there was a third brother Pierre born in Bergerac around 1798. Earlier records of the Grasset Latour’s in Begerac are patchy because they were Protestants under a system of state-mandated Catholicism in which the Church recorded vital records. But in 1798, Pierre would have been born under the French Republic when civil records were maintained, regardless of faith. So, there is no reason a birth record in the late 1790s would not have turned up during Duhamel’s research. At best, a third brother Pierre might have born someplace else other than Bergerac as his father moved about during his military career.

As separate individuals, Jean Homeraha and Pierre Grasset Latour would have been born 5-6 years apart. However, there appears to be good reason for a young man born on 26 Fructidor year XII of the French Republic not to know his birth date. First, the arcane French Republican calendar system was abandoned the year after his birth. Perhaps more importantly, setting out for a new life in the Louisiana as a slightly older person would have had its advantages, not the least of which was appearing older to future in-laws when marrying their 15-year old daughter.

It is likely that Jean Homeraha Grasset Latour and Pierre Grasset Latour/Grasset Latour are one and the same.]

The civil registry of Bergerac was searched from 1754 to 1771, but did not uncover the baptismal record for Jean Grasset Latour (your ancestor) born in 1761, nor that of Pierre Grasset LATOUR, born about 1758, whose marriage certificate and marriage contract were found ... and in which he was "the eldest son."

They could have been born "in the Wilderness," in the Protestant faith, being the two eldest children.

Search for the marriage of Jean Grasset Latour and Marie Bertrand

No marriage certificate concerning them was found in the Dordogne archives from 1793 to 1797 (Marie Généreuse was born in year 5 = 1797) nor in the township of Bergerac, nor in the township of La Force nor in that of Sigoules.

Research conducted by the city of La Rochelle revealed no marriage of Grasset Latour/Bertrand in year 4 [of the Repubican Calender] in La Rochelle.

The marriage could take place before the year 4 in La Rochelle or in another city, because Jean Grasset Latour was a soldier.

    Filed 9 Apr 1845
    Probate File #144
St Charles Parish Courthouse, Hahnville, Louisiana, USA

Today, second of the month of november of the year eighteen hundred forty four, the sixty ninth year of the Independence of the United States of America, by virtue of a written order from the Honorable probate Court in and for St. Charles Parish, dated November first of the present year rendered upon petition of Mr. Onesiphore St.Amand, executor of the will of the late Antoine D'Aspit St. Amand.

Today, first of the month of May of the year eighteen hundred and thirty eight, sixty second of the Independence of the United States of America, I, F.L. Labranche, Judge in and for St. Charles Parish in which I reside and practice the functions of Notary Public, upon request of Mr. Antoine St. Amand of this Parish, have called to this residence at three o'clock in the afternoon in order to receive his last will and testament. I found said Antoine St.Amand in a bedroom lit by a window facing the river, opening on a gallery, connected by a back door to a second gallery, sound of mind, memory and judgment as it appeared to me, above named Judge-Notary as well as to the witnesses whose names follow: Louis Friloux, Pierre Kinter and Jacques Kinter, all major of age and residing in this Parish. He declared that, although not ill at the present moment but being very old, he must expect to die at any time and did not want to be taken by death unaware. I declare that my name is Antoine D'Aspit (?) St. Amand son of Dominique St. Amand and Francoise Pujol, both deceased. I was born in St. Charles Parish in seventeen hundred and fifty-seven and have always resided there. I married a second time with Dme. Celeste, Henry Jean Eldemair. I had four children from that second marriage, three of them being still alive: Dme Eliza St.Amand, Onesime Onesiphore St.Amand and Eluther (?) St.Amand.

I declare that I had, outside of my marriage, from my relations with Therese Belasie, free negrees, four children named: Honorine, mulata, of about sixteen years of age, Arsene, mulato, about fifteen years old, Victorin, mulato, about twelve years old and Jean Baptiste Brecourt, mulato, about nine years old.

I declare granting full and complete freedom to the above named children, Honorine, Victorin, Arsene and Jean-Baptiste Brecourt and request the executor of the present will, whom I shall designate, to fulfill all necessary formalities required by the law for the emancipation of those children, born to the negrees Belasie before she was granted her freedom.

I give and bequeath to each of the above named children, Honorine, Arsene, Victorin, and Jean-Baptiste Brecourt, to be taken from the cash balance of my estate, the amount of one hundred piastres, payable in full, said amount to be deposited with their mother and held by her until the majority of the marriage of each child. I wish said amount of four hundred piastres bequested hereby, paid to Theree Belasie within the year following my death.

I give and bequeath to said Therese Belasie the amount of four hundred piastres to be paid in one single payment by my executor within six months following my death. I declare also that I grant their freedom to my two slaves, Francois and Marie, both of about sixty years of age. I give and bequeath to the shop of the St. Charles Parish Church the amount of one hundred piastres payable in one single payment.

I give and bequeath to Arsene, son of Therese Belasi, named above, my saddle horse called Cayetano, which I bought at the sale of the late Norbert Zeringue's estate. I also give and bequeath a cow to each of the other children of Therese Belasie: Honorine, Victorin, and Jean-Baptiste Brecourt, said cows, with the horse Cayetano to be entrusted by my executers to Therese Belasie.

And, for the executor of the present will, I designate my nephew and godson, Mr. Onesiphore St.Anand, to whom I entrust the safekeeping of all my possessions from the day of my death and to whom I give all necessary powers for the líquidation of my estate.
