Jean Francois Daspit de St Amand, native of Toulouse, France was born in 1690, the son of Jacques Daspit de Saint-Amand and Dominique Bordeliere. He went to live in Paris and consolidate is fortune, but after a sequence of adventures and some unfortunate duels he had to leave France. In 1719 he departed for Louisianna provided with a commission of miliatary Captain, which was purchased for him by his father.

After arriving in Louisianna Jean Francois married demoiselle Marie Francoise du Buisson, native of Dunkirk, daughter of Leon du Buisson and Marie Anne Carrep on April 13, 1722. There is no mention of when she arrived in America. The marriage is recorded in Reg. 1 - 1720-1730, Folio 49, entry #119. Children:

Dominique Daspit St. Amand - born 1728

Jean Francois was made commandant of the upper part of the Louisianna province and was assigned to Fort Rosalie near the present site of Natchez. In the "History of Louisiana", Charles Gayarre tells of the circumstances surrounding Jean Francois' death. Marie Francoise later married Antoine Muillion.

Bernard Daspit, esquire, lord of Meilhan, etc. born in 1633, counsellor at the Court of Toulouse, had his coat of arms recorded in 1698 in the General Armorial of France, the recording says” “of gold, with a pine tree of sinople, and top of azure, argent horned, between two golden stars”. He married in 1662 noble demoiselle Anne de St. Amand, heiress of the ancient family de Saint-Amand of Toulouse, whose name he added to his own. ANNE DE SAINT-AMAND was born in 1642. She was the great great granddaughter of Anthony de Saint-Amand. She was the noble demoiselle and heiress of the ancient family of de Saint-Amand. The family probably lived at St-Amand Chatelenie, near St. Amans, 4 miles south of Muret until her marriage. Anne was the last of the Saint-Amands and when she married Bernard D'Aspit in 1662, Bernard added her name to his creating the name "D'Aspit de Saint-Amand."

Pierre Daspit4 , esquire, lord of the said manor and of Bavarlhes, magistrate and lieutenant at the siege of Frontigues, commissioner and deputy for the execution of the ordinances issued by the Duke d'Epernon, Kings governor of the province of Guienne. He is mentioned in an act of April 17, 16_7, containing an estimate for repairs to be made at the Castle of Castelviel, near Luchen.In numerous locations Pierre is referred to as Freire, however it is most likely that Pierre is the correct name since Freire means "father" in French. By his marriage contracted in 1632, with the noble demoiselle Madeliene de Cotten, he had three children, as follows:

Henri de Saint-Amand
Paul d'Alleman de Saint-Amand was the high page (comrade in arms) of Henri de Bourbon (Prince of Condé). His son, Henri, b 1626, died with no issue. His daughter, Marguerite, is documented in records dated 1650. His Seigneuris was probably located at the village of St-Amand which is 9 miles west of Avignon on Route D-19.
This Saint-Amand is quite possibly the nobleman who sponsored and gave the Saint-Amand name to Marc-Antoine Gerard (1594 - 1661).

Marc Antonie de Gerard Saint-Amant
SAINT-AMANT, Marc Antonie de Gerard, Sieur de, (1594 - 1661) Franch poet born near Rouen in the year 1594. His father was a merchant who had, according to his son’s account, been a sailor and had commanded for 22 years "une ascadre de la reine Elizabeth" - a vague statement that lacks confirmation. The son had obtained a patent of nobility and attached himself to different great noblemen - the Duc de Retz and Comte d’Harcourt among others. He saw military service and sojourned at different times in Italy, in England - a sojourn which provoked from him a violen political attack on the country, ALBINI 1643. In Poland he held a court appointment for two years. St. Amant’s later years were spent in France; and he died in Paris on the 29th of December 1661.
Saint-Amant has left a not inconsiderable body of poetry. His ALBINI and ROME RIDICULE set the fashion of a burlesque poem, a form in which he was excelled by his follower, Paul Scarron. In his later years he devoted himself to serious subjects and produced MOISE SAUVE 1653. His best work consists of Bacchanalian songs, his DEBAUCHE being one of the most remarkable convivial poems of its kind.
