    Obituary:
    Leopold Dufilho
Death of a Popular Attaché of the Whitney National Bank

Last Wednesday morning the business community and many friends of the family were shocked to read the announcement of the death of Leopold Dufilho, the esteemed and deservedly popular bookkeeper of the Whitney National Bank. Truly it is that in the midst of life we are in death was never more exemplified than in this sudden taking off of one in the full vigor and meridian of his manhood. Leopold Dufilho was at his desk at the bank up to 5 p.m. on Saturday evening, and feeling slightly indisposed, called on the family physician. On Monday he went out to take a ride as the diversion and eating were calculated to be beneficial. He and his family believed that it was only a slight ailment and he would soon be all right again. Then on Tuesday, March 19, he suddenly became faint, and becoming weaker, succumbed to cardiac troubles, not withstanding all efforts that were made to stay the icy hand of death.

Leopold Dufilho was but 33 years of age. He was born in Paris, France, during the visit to that metropolis of his parents, his father, Mr. Alfred Dufilho, being at that time a member of that prominent banking firm of Lafitte, Dufilho & Co., well and prominently known in this city in antebellum days and up in the eighties. His mother was Miss Corinne Taylor. Under the careful tutelage of his father, he received a practical knowledge of banking and obtained the position of bookkeeper at the Whitney National Bank, where for eleven years, and up to almost the hour of his death, he was a faithful and painstaking [-]. His work was such that not only did he enjoy the friendship of his co-workers, but he had the confidence and esteem of the officers of the bank, who recognized his many excellent qualities. During the existence of the Commercial Club he was one of the members, and also belonged to the Rod and Gun Club at Chef Menteur.

He married Miss Rosema Larose and leaves her with three children, a daughter aged 11 years, and two sons, aged respectively 7 and 9 years. Also, his father and his mother, three sisters, and one brother, Alfred Dufilho, Jr., also a bookkeeper at the Whitney National Bank, who are inconsolable at their said affliction.

Last Wednesday evening here joined the family at the residence, No. 1215 N. Dorgenois street, immeasurable friends, bank officers, fellow clerks, etc. to do their sad homage to him that was so well beloved. Impressive were the ceremonies conducted by Rev. Father [-] at the residence and at the Church of St. Rose de Lima, and also at Washington cemetery No. 1 [now Lafayette Cemetery No. 1], where the remains were carried away in the [casket?]. The pallbearers were: E.S.D. Logon, J. [O?]. Larose, John Ferguson, [E.] Larose, R. C. [Benton?], Numa [Bertel?], L. D. [Martin?], and S. A. [McMain?].

    Notes:

    America's first licensed pharmacist
Dufilho's most significant contribution to the history and integrity of the field of pharmacy took place in New Orleans in 1816. In 1804, the State of Louisiana, led by Governor Claiborne, passed a law that required a licensing examination for pharmacists wishing to practice their profession.
Prior to this law and before Louisiana became a U.S. State, there were some informal territory licensing measures, but none were enforced. A person could apprentice for six months and then compound and sell his or her own concoctions without any regulations or standards. The public received incorrect doses and erroneous medications. In 1804, Governor Claiborne established a board of reputable pharmacists and physicians to administer a three-hour oral examination given at the Cabildo in Jackson Square.
Louis J. Dufliho, Jr. was the first lo pass the licensing examination therefore making his pharmacy the first United States apothecary shop to be conducted on the basis of proven adequacy.

Louis J. Dufilho, Jr. Apothecary & Residence
514/516 Chartres Street, New Orleans, LA

Louis J. Dufilho, Jr. purchased the 514/516 Chartres Street lots on June 5, 1822 from Philip Sadler. The original Creole townhouse was constructed between 1822 and 1823. Dufilho officially opened his apothecary for business in 1823. The courtyard originally had several structures that do not exist today.

In 1837, New Orleanian architect, J.N.B. DePouilly proposed and constructed the updates to Dufilho’s building - three-story masonry porte cochere building with an entresol level.

According to City Records, in 1855, Dufilho sold the building and the contents of the apothecary to Mrs. Celestine Pauline Fleitas, widow of James Dupas. She in turn, sold the building in 1875 to Peter Boehm who opened the Crescent City Paper Warehouse on the site.

The building changed hands several times and was vacant for several years. On December 15, 1937, Mayor Robert S. Maestri purchased the building from the Interstate Trust and Banking Co. in liquidation. Mayor Maestri donated the building to the City of New Orleans in the same year to be used as a Napoleon Museum . Officials confused the history of 514 Chartres Street with the history of the Nicholas Girod House at 500 Chartres Street. The Girod House was the home designated for Napoleon’s exile, not 514 Chartres. After additional research, the City of New Orleans realized the significance of Louis J. Dufilho, Jr. and of 514 Chartres to the history of pharmacy and designated the site as the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum. After some building repairs and artifact collection, the Museum officially opened its doors in 1950.

Marcellin eventually gained total control of the rest of the family's land, and commissioned the 1836-1839 remodeling. The plantation remained in the family's hands until it was sold to a Northerner, Bradish Johnson, after the Civil War. It was Johnson who actually named the property Whitney in honor of his grandson, Harry Payne Whitney.

    Evergreen Plantation

The important plantation houses on adjacent plantations in St. John the Baptist Parish now known as Evergreen and Whitney originally were identical houses built probably at the same time by two brothers, Christophe and Jean Jacques Haydel, sons of Ambroise Haydel. Their grandmother, the widow of Jean Adam Heidel, had, with two sons, arrived at Biloxi on the ship La Charente in 1721. One of these sons, Ambroise Haydel, had been born about 1702 in Newkirchen, and in 1724 was living on the Louisiana German Coast in the village of Hoffen.

The house that is now Whitney was probably built by Jean Jacques Haydel and Evergreen by his brother Chrisophe in the 1780s or '90s. Christophe's daughter Magdelaine, the widow of Pierre Antoine Becnel, acquired full ownership of the plantation in 1801 from her sister Françoise, wife of Pierre Marmillon. One of Magdelaine's sons, Drozin, and his wife both died of smallpox in 1804, leaving their son Pierre Clidamant Becnel in his grandmother's care. On her death in 1830, Pierre Clidamant gained full ownership of the plantation by purchasing the interest of the other of his grandmother's heirs.
