Notes:

Governor Thomas Hinckley is the third great grand uncle of Captain Orramel Hinckley of Washington, Louisiana. In 1634/35, when he was about sixteen, he immigrated to Massachusetts with his family aboard the Pilgrim ship know as the “Good ship Hercules of Sandwich” or “Hercules of Dover”. He travelled with his parents and three sisters Susannah, Sarah, Mary.
He was the governor of the Plymouth Colony and held several other governmental positions during his lifetime. Towards the end of the reign of King James II, New England was constituted a Vice-Royalty, with a governor and council. Thomas was nominated to the latter by James II. After the fall of James II, Vice-Royalty was abolished, and Thomas assumed the governorship. He was the first deputy governor in 1680 and governor from 1681 to 1692, when the Massachusetts Charter absorbed the old Colony.

Died:
Gov. Thomas Hinckley died April 25, 1705, aged 87, not 85, as stated on the monument recently erected to his memory. [Otis, Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families: Volume II, 34.]

Notes:

Mary was the widow of Nathaniel Glover and the only child of Mr. Quartermaster Smith. She was represented to have been beautiful in person, and the most accomplished and intelligent woman in the Colony. Her daughters bore a striking resemblance to the mother, and in her grandsons seems to have been concentrated the intellectual vigor of the grandfather, and the accomplishments of the grandmother. Notes:

Samuel Hinckley is the common ancestor of all Hinckleys in this country. In 1628 it appears by the colony records that Elder Nathaniel Tilden, of Tenterden, purchased lands in Scituate, Massachusetts. In the spring of 1635 Samuel Hinckley, Elder Nathaniel Tilden, John Lewis, and James Austin, of Tenterden, in the County of Kent, in England, and several other families from that County, making a company of 102, counting men, women, children and servants, resolved to emigrate to New England. They sailed from Sandwich in the ship Hercules.

Samuel Hinckley brought with him his wife Sarah and four children, and immediately after his arrival in Boston went to Scituate and built a house which was known as No. 19 on Kent street. Samuel Hinckley continued to reside in Scituate until 1640, when he sold his house, farm and meadows, and relocated to Barnstable, Massachusetts. His house lot was bounded south by his son Thomas', and west by Rowley's pond, near which he built his house, a small one-story building, with a thatched roof. He was one of the original founders of West Barnstable, where he owned one of the best farms in the town.

[IT:My body to be buried in the churchyard of Haryetsham. To the poor. To the reparation of the church of Haryetsham 3s.4d. To Alyce[BO: Fekyns:BO] wife of John [BO:Fekys:BO], 12d. To godson Henrye Hynckleye 12d. To Katheryne [BO:Lytlehare:BO], my daughters daughter. To my wife, Avysse, two bushels of wheat lying amoung the wheat of my son Robert [BO:Hyncklye:BO]. All my goods and cattle to my wife Avysse and daughter Annys, and to the latter certain pewter household goods [specified] and at the age of twenty-one 10£, to be paid by my son Robert. For default of payment, daughter Annys to enter into my chief messuage at Haryetsham, wherein Robert, my son, now dwelleth, and lands thereto belonging until the sum is paid. If Annys die before her said age, my wife to have 5£, and Henry [BO:Hyncklye:BO] and John [BO:Hyncklye:BO], sons of my son John [BO:Hyncklye:BO] all have 20s each. My tenement Steden strete, wherein I now dwell, with a barn and certain lands adjoining called Stylles feylds, containing six acres, and two other pieces of land, called Newman and chawke lande in Haryetsham, to wife Avysse and her heirs for the term of thirteen years after my decease, if she live so long, paying the lords rent, and 26s.8d. a year to John Hynckleye, my son, to whom I leave the said property after my wife's decease or at the end of the said thirteen years, at his death to revert to his son Henry [BO:Hynckleye:BO], and his heirs male, and for want of such to the heirs male of my son John, and for want of such to Robert my son and his heirs male and for want of such to the right hers of my son John.
