On Sunday, January 12th, there gathered at the residence of Mr. Clement Hollier, a few miles from Opelousas, the children and grandchildren - of that venerable old gentleman, perhaps the oldest man in the parish of St. Landry. The feast and celebration was attended by the following children and grandchildren of the old gentleman: A. T. Hollier and family, A. L. Hollier and family, A. M. Hollier and family, T. J. His father, Jean Marie Debaillon, was a native of France, born in Paris in 1783. He removed to Louisiana and located in St. Landry parish when a young man, where he became a leading citizen. He represented St. Landry parish in the Legislature for a number of terms. Before he came to America he had served in the French Navy. He became one of the most extensive and wealthy planters of St. Landry parish before his death, in 1838. The mother of Dr. Debaillon died in 1834.

Dr. Louis Debaillon is the oldest of a family of nine children. He was for five years a student of Emmetsburg College, Maryland, and subsequently pursued a course of medicine in the Medical College of Paris, from which institution he received his degree. He began his professional career in St. Landry parish, in 1836, and was engaged in active practice until 1889, when, feeling the weight of his years, he retired from his professional duties.

Dr. Debaillon was married in 1838, to Miss Amy Toledano, a native of Louisiana, born in New Orleans, 1822. They became the parents of twelve children, eight sons and four daughters. The doctor has prospered financially, and owns considerable property in St. Landry parish.

The subject's maternal grandfather, Fontenot, was one of the first settlers of St. Landry parish, and the only man at that time who spoke English. He also spoke the Indian language fluently.

Mrs. Dr. Debaillon died in this parish in 1887. She was a member of the Catholic church.

The year one thousand eight hundred and twenty three, the forty eighth of the independence of the United States of America, and the thirtieth day of September, eight o'clock in the morning, I, the undersigned Marc Lafitte, Notary public commissioned for the city and parish of New Orleans, residing there, I moved after requisition to Mr. Louis Dufilho, resident and owner in this parish, and being temporarily, because of his illness, in the home of his brother Mr. Dufilho, pharmacist, Rue de Chartres in this city, where having come I found the said Mr. Louis Dufilho in bed, sick of body, in a room overlooking the courtyard of a house rented by his brother, but having all his moral understanding, as he appeared with evidence to the Notary and to the three witnesses named below.

Mr. Louis Dufilho asked me to receive his will and act of last will that I, the notary, will write with my hand, word for word, and as the said testator will say and dictate it in the presence of Messrs. Auguste Rieffel, Nicolas Mioton and Samuel Hermann, all residing and domiciled in this city and called as witnesses to the present testament, the content of which follows.

My name is Louis Dufilho, I am about forty-five years old. I was born in Mirande, department of Gers in the Kingdom of France. I am the legitimate son of Jean Dufilho and Dame Jeanne Marie Bonnet, both deceased. I am united by the bonds of marriage to Demoiselle Delphine Bozonnier and from my marriage, I have four children including three boys and a girl, the latter is married to Mr. Eugène Lartigue from Bordeaux.

My wife is required by law to become the guardian of my children of minority age. I confirm my assent to this provision of the law because she is a good mother. I want my brother Louis Joseph Dufilho to become their substitute tutor. I ask my family and the courts which must know to confirm my choice.
I ask those of my children who are or will reach puberty to present their mother for their curator ad bona [In charge of managing their goods and possessions].

I appoint for my executor Mr. Louis Joseph Dufilho, conferring on him in said capacity, all the powers necessary for the administration of my property during the year of exercise of said office.
I break and cancel all wills and codicils prior to this will which alone will be executed.
In this place, the said testator declaring that he has nothing more to add and mention in this will. I, the undersigned Notary, read it to him in a loud and intelligible voice in the presence of the three witnesses already named, and in their presence, the said testator said and recognized the good hearing, the good understanding and the well expressed recognition of his last intentions in which he persists.
Done and closed immediately, without interruption and without entertaining other acts in New Orleans at the domicile already established in this act, the days, months and above. The testator signed with the three witnesses named and the undersigned notary. Signed L.D. the testator after useless efforts to be able to sign while knowing how to sign, declared not being able at the moment, being too weak. The witnesses immediately signed with the notary.

The minute is signed Samuel Hermann, N. Mioton, Ate. [Auguste] Rieffel, Mc. [Marc] Laffite Not. Pub. [Notary Public].

I certify this copy as true to the original which I am the custodian of. As a testimony, I signed and sealed it with the seal of my office.

New Orleans, October two, one thousand eight hundred and twenty-three, the year forty-eight of the independence of the United States. (signed) Ma Lafitte Not. Pub.

    Died Oct. 2, 1823
    Aged 40 yrs.

    Died:
According to Louis's probate, he died on the first of the month. It is therefore assumed that the date on the tombstone index is the date of burial.

Louis married Aimée Delphine Bozonier Marmillion on 24 Apr 1805 in Edgard, St John the Baptist, Louisiana, USA. Aimée (daughter of Pierre Bozonier Marmillion and Francoise Haydel) was born on 14 Apr 1789 in St John the Baptist, Louisiana, USA; died on 18 Mar 1869 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA; was buried in St Louis Cemetery #2, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA. 10. 25.  Aimée Delphine Bozonier Marmillion was born on 14 Apr 1789 in St John the Baptist, Louisiana, USA (daughter of Pierre Bozonier Marmillion and Francoise Haydel); died on 18 Mar 1869 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA; was buried in St Louis Cemetery #2, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

    • Probate: 14 Nov 1839, Jefferson, Louisiana, USA
    • Probate: 1869
    • Will: 22 Mar 1869, Orleans, Louisiana, USA

    Notes:

    Residence:
Delphine Bozonier Marmillion, widow of Louis Dufilho (the sugar plantation owner and brother of the pharmacist Louis Joseph Dufilho Jr.), resided for many years in what is known as Villa Meilleur, which is located at the present-day address of 1418 Governor Nicholls Street in Tremé and now houses The New Orleans African American Museum (https://www.noaam.org). Delphine is also my 4th great-grandmother.

The villa was part of the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1933 and you can find that information here: https://www.loc.gov/item/la0299. The survey mistakenly notes that Delphine was “wife of the prominent pharmacist,” but the brothers often confused.

Governor Nicholls Street was historically known as Bayou Road and this villa was often referred to as “the residence on Bayou Road, between Marais and Villere streets” in many historical records. So, the fact that Delphine Bozonier Marmillion was the owner of this home is very clear. I do not yet know when she purchased the villa, but it was sometime between 1836-1841.
Delphine’s daughter, Sophie Marie Josephine (Dufilho) Lartigue, passed away in this home, as did her granddaughters, Delphine Lartigue in 1841 and Felicie (Lartigue) Goldthwaite in 1914.

The following was written about the villa in the Historic American Buildings Survey:

“Villa Meilleur is a raised creole villa with a basement that is submerged four feet into the ground. This, along with the high-pitched gabled roof, front gallery, central and rear loggias, double interior French door units, long windows, fixed louvered shutters, attic buffer zone, and thick solid brick walls create a perfect response to the hot, humid Louisiana environment. The central chimneys and basement ventilation system allows for excellent air control. The original four dormers allowed for each second primary level room to have cross ventilation through each side window.

The millwork throughout the villa is excellent and of heart cypress wood. The floors are heart red pine maintaining their original finish. The large front floor length double hung windows replace original French doors and provide exceptional air control. During the mid-nineteenth century they were installed with very fine and still extant gasoliers.”
