    L. M. ROGER, Arnaudville.- L. M. Roger, a prominent merchant of St. Landry parish, and a member of the firm Roger Bros., is a native of St. Martin parish, Louisiana. He is the son of Francois and M. (Thibodeaux) Roger, natives of Louisiana. He was born in 1843, and spent his school days in St. Martin parish. During the war, before the battle of Shiloh, he joined the Orleans Guards Battalion and was subsequently transferred to the Third Louisiana Infantry, in which he served until the regiment disbanded. He was in many of the active engagements in which his department participated. At Spanish Fort, near Mobile, he received a flesh wound which disabled him until the time of the surrender. On coming home after the war he began a mercantile business as sub-manager for U. A. Gilbeau, of this place, and was in his employ for some time. He was subsequently employed at Breaux Bridge, Abbeville, and there became the partner of Joseph Plonsky in a mercantile business. In 1875 he removed to St. Landry parish, where he engaged in mercantile business, in partnership with his brother. In July, 1885, he was married to Miss D. .A. Hincklev. of St. Landry parish. He is a prominent Mason.

    Obituary:
It is with deep feeling of regret that we announce the demise of Capt. O. Hinckley, who died - after a lingering illness of several months - at his residence in Washington, on Tuesday last, at the age of 55 years.

Capt. Hinckley was too well and favorable known lor us to repeat here his good qualities. His disiuterestedness, his simple and open urbanity of manners, and oilier qualities of the heart will long he remembered by many.

Capt. Hinckley came to our parish about thirty years ago, most of which time he was interested in our steamboat navigation. He leaves a family and a large, circle of friends to whom his remembrance will ever be dear.

  1. 12.  Charles Hinckley was born on 7 Jan 1790 in Thetford, Orange, Vermont, USA (son of Colonel Oramel Hinckley and Lydia Strong); died after 1816 in Vincennes, Knox, Indiana, USA.

    Notes:

After the settlement of his father's estate, Charles who owned the home place sold out and moved to Vincennes, Indiana, where he and his wife both died of the diseases of the country and their only son Oramel was taken possession of by a Mr. Wood and was removed to Mobile, Alabama, together with the property of which Wood had possession. This Oramel is eventually settled in Louisiana and is the progenitor of the Louisiana Hinckleys. ["Orramel Hinckley and Family Papers, Mss. 1151, 1317, 970"; LSU Special Collections.]

Arthur Latham Hinckley, Jr. notes that he has a letter written by Caroline (Hinckley) Latham to Orramel Strong Hinckley. In this letter Caroline writes that Orramel & Lydia (Strong) Hinckley died within a few weeks of each other and since Charles was the oldest, it was thought best for him to have the homestead and make a home for his sisters and brothers. He married the following spring (1812). Caroline left home when Oramel was about 3 yeras old. Not long afterwards, Charles "removed to the West."

    Died:
Although some sources state that Charles Hinckley died in 1814, this date cannot be correct if his son Orramel Hinckley was born in 1816. No hard evidence has been found for Charles' death and a death date of sometime after 1816 is the best available at this time.

  1. 24.  Colonel Oramel HinckleyColonel Oramel Hinckley was born on 28 Feb 1768 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, USA (son of Charles Hinckley and Elizabeth Throop); died between 23 and 25 Oct 1811 in Montague City, Franklin, Massachusetts, USA; was buried in East Thetford Cemetery, East Thetford, Orange, Vermont, USA.

    • _ELEC: Between 1792 and 1795, Thetford, Orange, Vermont, USA; Town Clerk & Treasurer

    Notes:

The Hinckley family came early to Thetford and were very influential in the development of the town. Unlike most of Thetford's early residents, they came from Lebanon, Connectcut, the next town to Hebron. Oramel Hinckley settled on Thetford Hill, and owned large tracts of land in town. [Baldwin, History and Folklore of Post Mills Vermont, 7]

    Birth:
Some derivative records appear to indicate that Oramel may have been born in Thetford, Vermont while others indicate Lebanon, Connecticut. Since his other siblings were born in Lebanon combined with the fact that his father Charles never permanently settled in Thetford, we are assuming that he was probably born in Lebanon. Furthermore, there are some discrepancies for Col. Orramel's date of birth. On source lists his birth as 29 feb 1766, but 1766 is not a leap year. The correct date may have been 1768 as indicated by most sources, but this date has not been reliably verified.

    Residence:
Oramel settled in Thetford, Vermont, in 1790, and was admitted to the Orange county bar at the December term, 1798, and was state's attorney for the county in 1799. He represented the town of Thetford in the state legislature. Notes:

Charles was a prominent man in town affairs, acquired quite an amount of property, was Captain of a company in the American Revolution and served to its close. ["Orramel Hinckley and Family Papers, Mss. 1151, 1317, 970"; LSU Special Collections, UU:651, box 1, folder 8, genealogy papers.]

The Hinckley family came early to Thetford and were very influential in the development of the town. Unlike most of Thetford's early residents, they came from Lebanon, Connectcut, the next town to Hebron. Charles Hinckley owned much land near Lake Fairlee. He may have been one of the later proprietors, as he had one lot of 800 acres. He did not live in Thetford, but judging from the many deeds he gave to land from this 800-acre lot, he evidently came from Lebanon to Thetford many times. It is interesting to note that he signed all these deed in the summer months. This led Mrs. Slade to comment that Charles Hinckley was Thetford's first summer resident. Although he never settled permanently in Thetford, he owned much land in the town, especially around Fairlee Lake, and continually bought and sold land. [Baldwin, History and Folklore of Post Mills Vermont, 7,22.]
