    Notes:

    Charles was a prominent man in town affairs, acquired quite an amount of property, was Captain of a company in the American Revolution and served to its close. ["Orramel Hinckley and Family Papers, Mss. 1151, 1317, 970"; LSU Special Collections, UU:651, box 1, folder 8, genealogy papers.]

    The Hinckley family came early to Thetford and were very influential in the development of the town. Unlike most of Thetford's early residents, they came from Lebanon, Connectcut, the next town to Hebron. Charles Hinckley owned much land near Lake Fairlee. He may have been one of the later proprietors, as he had one lot of 800 acres. He did not live in Thetford, but judging from the many deeds he gave to land from this 800-acre lot, he evidently came from Lebanon to Thetford many times. It is interesting to note that he signed all these deed in the summer months. This led Mrs. Slade to comment that Charles Hinckley was Thetford's first summer resident. Although he never settled permanently in Thetford, he owned much land in the town, especially around Fairlee Lake, and continually bought and sold land.     Notes:

    Samuel Hinckley is the common ancestor of all Hinckleys in this country. In 1628 it appears by the colony records that Elder Nathaniel Tilden, of Tenterden, purchased lands in Scituate, Massachusetts. In the spring of 1635 Samuel Hinckley, Elder Nathaniel Tilden, John Lewis, and James Austin, of Tenterden, in the County of Kent, in England, and several other families from that County, making a company of 102, counting men, women, children and servants, resolved to emigrate to New England. They sailed from Sandwich in the ship Hercules.

    Samuel Hinckley brought with him his wife Sarah and four children, and immediately after his arrival in Boston went to Scituate and built a house which was known as No. 19 on Kent street. Samuel Hinckley continued to reside in Scituate until 1640, when he sold his house, farm and meadows, and relocated to Barnstable, Massachusetts. His house lot was bounded south by his son Thomas', and west by Rowley's pond, near which he built his house, a small one-story building, with a thatched roof. He was one of the original founders of West Barnstable, where he owned one of the best farms in the town.

    William Buell, Sr., was in the first land division in Windsor. He was a Puritan. In October 1650, he and his wife were indicted in Plymouth Colony for continuing their meeting from house to house on the Lord's Day, contrary to the order of the Court; but it does not appear that any punishment was inflicted.
